On the Move Again

The last few days have been mostly transit days.

We left Fitzroy on Thursday afternoon and had another overnight in Cairns. On Friday we caught the early morning train heading south toward our next stop, Airlie Beach. It was a long day, but we made it.

Airlie Beach has been in the news lately, thanks to Cyclone Debbie that struck the area, the eye of the storm. It was quite devastating, though with only one death. They got off lucky, considering the intensity of this weather bomb. The environment, on the other hand, not so much; the most obvious evidence of course being the leafless palm trees everywhere.

Our transfer from the train station was with a driver who must have just consumed a six-pack of Red Bull! Our tired minds and bodies couldn't keep up with his fast talking; thankfully his driving didn't match. On arrival at the hotel the front desk clerk must have been sharing that six-pack with him - he was so chatty that by the time we rolled ourselves into the elevator, we just looked at each other and burst out laughing - wondering what they put in the water here 😃

This morning came early. We were picked up around 6:30 to be taken to the Marina for our boat trip out into the Whitsunday Islands and the bulk of the day at Whitehaven Beach. A rough ride out - there were moments I swear the approx. 200 passenger ferry was airborne. The weather all day was iffy. Heavy squalls at times, then periods of light cloud/sun, mostly the former. The best part was a hike up to a lookout of the entire area. The sand here is 97% silica, making it like icing sugar - beautiful! At the end of the day, the boat was delayed due to a couple of missing guests. Spent 45 minutes patrolling the bay, until it was determined that we had everyone after all.

Great to hear from you gals. Wish I could be there with you on that gorgeous beach. And I can just hear your laughter on that elevator! Lol
Hope you are getting some down time in all this. Keep the pictures coming and enjoy.
